Don't Go!

This town is really really ugly in many ways. Dumpy hotels, binge drinking bars, crowded beach, and noise noise noise. The demographic appears to be firmly in the meat-head camp. It%26#39;s all that%26#39;s wrong with a beach ';community.';

Don't Go!

I kind of agree with you. I see youa er from DC. Too bad you didn%26#39;t get to see some of the other shore towns. Each has it%26#39;s own personality. Cape may has many 5 star restaurants and is a very classy year round town, Ocean Grove and Ocean city are family towns with great swimming beaches the shore has so much to offer that you can by pass the ones you went to and still find what you are looking for

Don't Go!

I hesitate to respond to some of these posts about certain shore towns because you get attacked on here for making negative comments. However, I feel bad when I know someone came from a distance to go to such a dump. Seaside Hts has always been a dump and always will be. It attracts not the best element in either visitor or the element that lives there. Next time, I%26#39;m sure you will do a bit more research to find a nicer place to go. There is something for everyone at the shore; sorry you went to a place that attracts meatheads.

Yup. I thnk is was Yogi who said ';Nobody goes there anymore because it%26#39;s so crowded.'; I suppose this makes sense to someone.

Pjk

I%26#39;m really glad I read this post, I have definitely re-thought going to Seaside Heights.

yes Seaside does not have 3 star hotels, but for some of us - its close enough to vacation at. I stay at the Belmont and the rooms are clean, the pool is clean and once you get to meet and great the staff, it becomes lots of fun. A bunch of us come year after year and have become friends. The boardwalk is fine, lots of diversity, which makes it fun. Some kiddie rides, but most for older, lets face it, you want kiddie rides go to Point Pleasant. I enjoy seaside and its fun for the few days a year I get to go. Would I like to go to Wildwood - probable, but not the 4 hour drive without the traffic. Vacations are what you make them. We enjoy our friends, the restaurants, such as on top of spaghetti, Klees, Hemmingways and the mexican deli, husband is into the boardwalk food. Daughter loves the water park, arcades and the beach. We always have a good time. If you are looking for an upper crust vacation. You are correct this is not it. Please try Cape May.

Yes, Seaside Heights definately has it%26#39;s bad points, but if you know where to go and what to do, it can be nice. Seaside Heights isn%26#39;t the nicest beach, but on somedays it%26#39;s free and so yes it can be noisy and crowded. However, I live close by and know that Seaside Park, Berkeley or Ortley Beaches are a better bet and not very far from SSH. Also, the SSH Boardwalk offers lots of free activities in the summer evenings and is a fun family place to be. The Sawmill Cafe has great deals on pizza and pitchers of soda, but Maruca%26#39;s has a better, more expensive pie. If you research and know what to expect, it will always make for a better experience.

I have to agree that although wildwood would be great, Seaside is the next best thing for me. I live not even a hour away and compared to Point Pleasant i like Seaside much better. I went alot last summer just for the day never had a problem and never encountered any bad people. I found the parking to be absolutely great as you can park right off the boardwalk which was very convenient when i have to lug a million things to the beach. For a day trip it is absolutely fine

I have allways enjoyed seaside. I allways go in the spring and fall.

For the past 11 years, my family gets the season beaches for Seaside Park.

I believe over the last 5 years Seaside Heights has gotten cleaner. The Boulevard is updated Better restaurants now. The boardwalk stills draws a rough crowd, especially on weekend nights. During the summer, the beach is free on Wed and Thurs and many more families are there.

I agree you will not find deluxe lodging, but it is not a terrible place to spend a day, especially on the free beach days.

I always feel really good about myself when I walk around Seaside and compare myself to everyone else walking around the boardwalk. Its a great self esteem boost.

Taj Employee Shot and Killed in Taj Casino this afternoon

APNewsBreak: Employee shot at NJ Taj Mahal dies

By WAYNE PARRY – 17 minutes ago (7:00 pm)

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — An employee was shot Wednesday inside the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort and died soon after, and a suspect was in custody, the casino%26#39;s CEO said.

The employee, whose name was not immediately released, was a shift manager who had been with the casino since the day it opened in 1990.

';He was the loveliest human being you ever want to meet,'; said Mark Juliano, CEO of Trump Entertainment Resorts, which runs the casino. ';He didn%26#39;t have an enemy in the world.';

Juliano said there did not appear to be a dispute between the victim and the shooter, whose identity also wasn%26#39;t immediately disclosed.

The casino shut its table games down Wednesday evening and sent home workers assigned there.

Police said they recovered the gun used in the shooting after arresting the suspect in a parking garage.

It was the second incident involving a gunshot at the casino this year.

On Jan. 30, a suspect in a New York embezzlement case pulled a gun and threatened to kill himself in an office there, sparking an 11-hour standoff that included his accidentally firing a shot before he surrendered.

In that incident, the man, from Coram, N.Y., was being sought by New York authorities who had tracked him to the casino and were escorting him into a security office.

During questioning, the man pulled out a handgun. A police officer pushed him into a holding cell and locked the door.

The Taj Mahal is the largest of three Atlantic City casinos run by Trump Entertainment Resorts, the gambling company formerly run by Donald Trump.

Trump relinquished control of it during a 2005 bankruptcy, and in February he resigned as its chairman when bond holders rebuffed his efforts to buy it.

The casino, located on the Boardwalk, is one of the largest in Atlantic City, with 4,000 slot machines and 210 tables games. It opened a 782-room second hotel tower last September.

The Taj Mahal, along with the Trump Plaza Hotel Casino and the Trump Marina Hotel Casino, is in bankruptcy court following a February Chapter 11 filing.

Taj Employee Shot and Killed in Taj Casino this afternoon

Oh my goodness! this is terrible!

Taj Employee Shot and Killed in Taj Casino this afternoon

I was just there last Wednesday and Thursday for a solo trip...I probably know the the victim or at least have seen him. I know pretty much everyone at the Taj, especially the old timers.

Previous reports stated the injuries were minor, now I%26#39;m reading that he died.

It will definately make me think twice about staying there again, especially with all the problems I%26#39;ve had with security in the past. I know this probably could have happened at any casino and you can%26#39;t search everyone, but I%26#39;ve always said as much as they have redone the Taj, you get some seedy charactors there.

My thoughts and prayers go out to this man%26#39;s family and friends.

What the hell is going on at the Taj? First, that elderly man was robbed, then a shooting a few months ago, now this? Its terrible!

Not exactly reassuring considering I stayed there last night and didn%26#39;t leave until 3 pm. I am SO glad I missed this insanity, but wonder why the Taj seems to attract the crazies. Of course all the casinos have problems, but it does seem that the Taj has more than most.

My heart goes out to the family and friends of the man who was killed, as a senseless tragedy like this spirals out and affects many people.

There have been a couple serious incidents at the taj in the past year. A robber tried to escape the police by running through the casino floor, and I think security detained a man and didn%26#39;t frisk him for weapons. It turned out he had a gun and he ended up holding himself hostage.

My friend was down this week. A homeless man came up to her asking her to buy his ';gold'; chains. Security was nowhere. She told him she was not interested. He picked up a drink and threw it on her. When security finally came 10 minutes later they said they couldn%26#39;t do anything about patron on patron crime. She was livid! Finally a manager came over and offered her a $40 meal comp. She is a Chairman card holder and didn%26#39;t need the comp. We are now staying elsewhere on our next trip.

MrsHeartRN,

The local news had a clip on the shooting and you may know the employee.

';Ray Kot was a shift manager who had been with the casino since the day it opened in 1990.';

Sad news for AC and Trump casino...prayers go out to the family.

ACGambler - I had a similar experience a few months ago... As I was sitting down at a VP machine, a homeless man (a very shifty looking character) sat down next to me and tried to force me into buying a ';diamond ring'; from me. I said No Thanks very politely. At which point he started screaming curses at me. Luckily, I had just sat down at the machine, and had only put my slot card in and no money yet. So I quickly yanked out my card and left the area. Of course, there was no security or employees anywhere in sight! It was a bit scary since I%26#39;m a ';vertically challenged'; middle-aged woman who was alone at the casino.

I%26#39;m going back to the Taj on Monday with an elderly friend who won%26#39;t go unless I go. And I promised I%26#39;d take her awhile ago. Now, I%26#39;m not so sure I want to go back there.

It%26#39;s a shame that the casino isn%26#39;t better ';policed';. I think the Taj has some of the best new penny slot machines on the boardwalk.

kc

Those of you who have been going to AC for as long as we have (since just after the first casino opened) realize how much security you saw back then as compared to how little you see today. The difference is huge and I fear these kinds of incidents (and even many more of the little annoyance kinds) will continue as long as security is one area they continue to under fund. Your staff and clients safety should not be an area you save money on, but it is a fact of life not only in the casinos!

This is sad but from reports this morning on the news this happened off the casino floor in an office. If you do not hear that small part of the story you would think this happened on the floor. It does not change the fact a man is dead but it leads people to believe they may not be safe when that is not the story.

Oceanfront efficiencies?

Does anyone know of clean oceanfront efficiences close to the boardwalk? I looked in Aqua Beach, but then read the reviews and decided not to book there.

We are a family of 4,but we also have another family of six traveling with us.We would even opt for a condo, but it has to oceanfront and close to the boardwalk.Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

THanks!

Oceanfront efficiencies?

Try the Aventurer http://www.adventurerinn.com/

Oceanfront efficiencies?

I also recommend the adventurer, good job staying clear of aqua beach

Wildwood oceanfront space is the boardwalk. Wildwood Crest begins at the south end of the boardwalk. The oceanfront facilites are all hotels until you get close to Diamond Beach. If you want to book for a group of 10, you may want to consider a condo. Remember, the owner pays taxes, so you save that additional %-age in costs. If you must be oceanfront, condos in that location start around Farragut %26amp; further South. If you can tolerate walking 1 block to the beach, then there are plenty of options in Wildwood Crest close to the boardwalk %26amp; 1 - 2 blocks to the beach. Just be sure you have a pool with the condo that is of a decent size.

The Gondolier Motel has effencicy units, that are two rooms.. They also have one unit that is a two bedroom two bath unit... They only have one of those, but they have quite a few effeciency rooms. The motel is only a block further away from the boardwalk then the Aqua, so the location is good. You may also try the Attache which is right next to the Gondolier Motel, as they have effeciancy units also..

If you were willing to stay in North Wildwood, Oceanside Apartments http://www.oceanside1501.com/ have one and two bedroom apartments with living rooms and kitchenettes. I have been going there for years. It is at the very beginning of the boardwalk right behind the Matador, so it is not right on the beach, but on the same block.

Seven-hour EWR layover -- Ellis Island possible??

Hi all, and thank you for your help!

We (BF and myself) will be flying on Continental from Canada into EWR in August, and have a 7 1/2 hour layover there. We are wondering about the logistics of possibly taking a cab from EWR to Liberty State Park, ferry to Ellis Island (maybe Statue if we have time), and get back to get to our plane. I am unfamiliar with EWR, but am assuming that even after customs, security, etc., we will have a good chunk of time to fill. Is this possible? Is it a good plan to go through Liberty State Park or would some other route to Ellis Island be a better option? How much time to allow at Ellis Island?

Thanks again!

Seven-hour EWR layover -- Ellis Island possible??

Take a cab to Liberty Park%26#39;s marina and take the water taxi to Manhattan and then back. This will give you great views of the Statute of Liberty and Ellis Island.

In my opinion, that is all the time you have.

You don%26#39;t really have 7.5 hours layover.

You have 5.5 - 6.5 depending on your outbound flight assuming your inbound flight is on time.

Lines for the ferry to Ellis Island and Liberty Island gets lengthy during summer months.

Seven-hour EWR layover -- Ellis Island possible??

A 7 hour layover gives you maybe 4 hours to do anything. However depending on where in Canada you%26#39;r coming from you might go through U.S customs in Canada before boarding the plane. The cab to the Water taxi sounds like a good idea. Here are a few links.

My husband and I will be going up for his 50th class reunion. The events will be mostly in the Neptune area (so suggestions don%26#39;t have to be limited to Ocean Grove), but we both like this town so much.

However, we will be staying about a week so cost is a factor. All suggestions are very welcome.

    Thanks!

    Dear Rehn,

There are so many places, if you are there for a week, make sure they have a great porch, discount beach badges and beach towels so you don%26#39;t have to worry about the wet mess. Also, if you can get a place close enough to not have to move your car much, it would be best! You can save a little with a shared bath over a private and if you book early you should be able to get a great place. www.oceangrovenj.com for a list of all the inns and prices. Don%26#39;t forget to get your tickets to the Great Auditorium shows while you are in town.

    Enjoy your trip!

    Lodging in June, 2009

I think we%26#39;ll book at the Quaker Inn soon. For one thing they have a weekly rate and we%26#39;ll be there at least that long. It turns out that we%26#39;ll be there the last week of July and the first week of August which is a period with a lot of activities going on. The inn also has individual a/c units which is important to us. My husband has cancer and a/c gives him serious chest pain.

In four weeks we%26#39;ll hear whether the med he%26#39;s on is working. It is the last option we know about. He is feeling fairly well and hasn%26#39;t had the most serious side effects for this med.

But you have to have things to look forward to. I can%26#39;t say that we should wait and see. We are both thinking positive thoughts.

The innkeeper was very nice and it seems likely that if we do have to cancel, they will be able to rebook the room. Airfares are a different story. Have to think about strategies there.

Thank you for replying. I appreciate it so much.

It sounds like you are thinking as positive as possible... Wishing you much prayers answered for your husband and hoping all works out for the best! And don%26#39;t forget to get your tickets to one of the shows at the Great Auditorium, only steps from the hotel. Also you have to stop into Days Ice Cream just across the street. Best around.

If you haven%26#39;t booked yet I would definitely recommend the Ocean Grove Plaza. (I posted a review).

It is a really, really great Inn for you and your husband.

We did already book, but thanks for the recommendation. If the Quaker Inn is homey and quiet and clean, we%26#39;ll be fine.

We got the test results back ten days ago and are so happy. 50% less cancer is a good result for the four months of side effects. We know he%26#39;ll have to go back on it again, but we hope we%26#39;ll be able to do the trip in late July. At least all the pain and sickness was worth it. We do have hope that he%26#39;ll eventually be in remission. His chest is much better; there are dramatically fewer nodules in his lungs and the mass of lymph nodes is half the size so maybe planes and a/c won%26#39;t be as painful for him.

Thanks to all who posted. I appreciate you.

    Ruth

Hi! I just happened to see your posts for Ocean Grove. I visit there often with my family and friends. I only stay at the Quaker Inn. It is very very clean, quiet, and right in town. You will love it there. There will be the Bridgefest festival at the end of July; 24th and 25th, and concerts the begining of August. I know, because I will be staying at the Quaker Inn then also, as well as in mid June. You will enjoy your stay there - I have no doubt. May God Bless You and All You Hold Dear -

rehn - Since you are likely flying out of Fort Myers, check out Spirit Air to ACY. They sometimes run some really cheap specials, especially if your travel dates are flexible. We just returned from visiting Mom in Naples, we really love it down there. Best wishes for both of you, you will have a wonderful time with old friends in NJ -- get some of that good Atlantic ocean air, it does wonders for a soul. Stay Strong!

    LuvBreezes

    Bless you both!

Don and I are looking forward to the trip. Don will have had a follow-up cat scan just before we go. I have to get all my work done ahead for the weeks we%26#39;ll be gone so, as usual, I%26#39;ll be flying tired.

When you get good news, you somehow think things will be wonderful -- and they are, but the other problems you had before the med are still there, too. The trip will be a good chance to get further away from on-going family upsets. (Now if I could just ditch his cell phone....)

We%26#39;re looking forward to the peace and charm of Ocean Grove.

    Ruth

    Dear rehn,

Prior to the first time I took my husband to Ocean Grove, his cell phone was stuck to his ear! We couldn%26#39;t even have a peaceful dinner at home without interruptions from customers. You would have thought going to O.G. was going to be such a ';bother'; for him - until he got there. I also told him how he wouldn%26#39;t move the car for the weekend - he couldn%26#39;t grasp that concept either.(suggesting he would never be able to relax there)! Well, that was about 5 years ago! I am happy to report from the first touch of the sand on his toes - he never, ever answered his cell ,or felt anything but peace while we were there, and happily shuts all electronic gear off when we reach O.Grove each and every time.

May God Bless You and All You Hold Dear -

I am going to be in Cape May from Saturday to Saturday. How can I get beach tickets when I get there? Can I get them by mail ahead of time? Or is that only the season passes that can be mailed ahead of time?

Beach Tags Start Saturday 5/23 until 9/7/09

Only the season beach tags are available by mail, but you have to do so before the end of March if I recall correctly.

It%26#39;s very easy to get beach tags tho. Most of the entry points to the beaches have a small ticket house there where they%26#39;re available for sale. If you%26#39;re staying Sat through Sat, I recommend buying a week long tag. :)
